Atlantis Exhibit Commemorative

This design is inspired by the way the orbiter is exhibited in its museum. The Atlantis exhibit was unveiled on June 30, 2013 three weeks after my heart attack. It is regarded as the most emotionally powerful reveal of all the orbiter exhibits. Even after ten years and seeing it a hundred times, I still get choked up.

As in the exhibit the orbiter is displayed at 43.21 degrees (an homage to a countdown). This is the view a guest sees when Atlantis is revealed. Behind the orbiter on a giant screen a video of the Earth from orbit is displayed. I illustrate the Earth showing Florida as the shuttle program home port and permanent home of Atlantis.

The inner text are the words spoken just before the orbiter is revealed:

“26 Years - 33 Missions - 126 Million Miles - ATLANTIS, Welcome Home!”

The ISS, Mir, Venus (STS-30), Jupiter (STS-34) and Hubble (STS-125) illustrate various missions flown.

Each patch has a gold rope inner border because each Shuttle Orbiter was named after Naval research vessels.

The stars pay tribute to each Atlantis mission.
