On March 23, 1965, during NASA’s Gemini III mission, pilot John Young smuggled a corned beef sandwich on rye bread into space.

The Smuggling Plot
•    The Origin: Fellow astronaut Wally Schirra purchased the sandwich from a local deli (Wolfie’s Restaurant and Sandwich Shop in Cocoa Beach / Florida).
•    The Hiding Spot: During suitup, Young concealed the foil-wrapped sandwich inside the pocket of his spacesuit.
•    The Official Food: NASA had provided the crew with unappetizing, gelatin-coated, and water-reconstituted tube or bite-sized space food cubes that the astronauts disliked.
In Orbit and the Complication
•    The Reveal: About two hours into the flight, Young pulled out the sandwich and offered a bite to mission commander Gus Grissom.
•    The Danger: As Grissom took a bite, the dry rye bread immediately began to disintegrate.
•    The Hazard: Tiny, sharp breadcrumbs floated freely in the zero-gravity cabin, threatening to drift into the instrument panels or get caught in the astronauts' eyes or intake vents.
•    The Stash: Grissom quickly stowed the remaining sandwich in his own spacesuit pocket to contain the mess.
•    This patch illustrates the Gemini 3 mission: launch, on orbit and splashdown within the shape of a slice of rye bread. A single bite forms the shape of the patch. I researched the incident and discovered that the sandwich only cost $1.65 in 1965. In researching the cost of each Gemini launch, I made it the delivery cost to orbit.
•    A space age “Uber eats.”
